For Lahaʻole Designs, we put intention behind every product and the process always starts with prayer. Tanya, our founder, waited for three signs to start this collection, as her aunty always told her that they always come in threes. Kupukupu, a native Hawaiian fern, is an endemic species that is one of the first plants to grow in lava fields; it is also planted by hula dancers in tops to kupu (sprout) knowledge and represents new growth and new beginnings.

The first sign was Kekupu (her eldest son)’s graduation. The second was the kiʻaʻi on Maunakea, who we flew out to support, and being in a place closest to heaven surrounded by kupukupu. The third sign came with the times. Due to the pandemic, the need to be resilient and honoring space to grow is essential. Now more than ever, it will take strength and determination to believe we will persevere and be resilient. With these three signs, the Kupukupu Collection was born.

As plants grow, they climb to higher heights. In the same fashion, our Kupukupu (Native Hawaiian Fern) Crawlers feature the resilience of the titular fern and offer a versatile palette for its wearer. The crawler earrings can be used as intended and have it rest along the curve of your ear or have it hang down like dangles. Available in 14K Vermeil or Sterling Silver, the Kupukupu Crawlers make a perfect gift for the accessory lover in your life or addition to your personal closet.
Kupukupu n. Sword fern (Nephrolepis exaltata), a long, narrow fern with many lateral divisions; it was sometimes added to the hula altar to Laka, for knowledge to kupu (sprout). (Neal 14–5.) (As found on wehewehe.org.)
I got what I paid for quickly. The earrings were beautiful

Beautiful climbers to match my ring!
I love my climbers and they match the kupu ring I bought from Lahaʻole earlier this year. Knowing that the purchase went to support ohana on Maui and a kanaka-run business were huge perks. I will wear these with deep pride and warm aloha.

Haven’t taken them off!
These earrings are perfect for everyday use. The flat back makes them comfortable to sleep with them on and doesn’t catch on masks. They’re delicate without being fragile and add simple style with no effort.
